Day 9: Kuranda

August 31, 2008

We ventured up into the mountains surrounding Cairns to visit the Rainforest town of Kuranda.  We went up to the town via the Kuranda Scenic Railway and back down via Skyrail.  It was such a lovely day.  We went to the Kuranda railway station and had some breakfast, I had a super good tomato, cheese, & ham sandwich.  It is sort of like a grilled cheese with the above ingredients.  Fabulous.  I also have discovered the coffee that I like which is a mocha.  It is sort of like what you get a Starbucks, but not with the chocolate overload.  Can you believe I found something with too much chocolate?  Scary times.  After our hour trip winding through the mountains, we made our way to Kuranda.  It was so spectacular.  A quaint town, with hikes all around and shopping.  Since it was Sunday, all the markets were open also.  Even better.  After hiking and shopping for a couple of hours we had lunch at, you guessed it, a sidewalk cafe.  I had fish and chips.  I must say the food in Australia is very good, at least I am getting a lot of exercise.  We made our way back down to Cairns via Skyrail and had magnificent views the whole way.  We have been so lucky with the weather.  I could not have asked for better temperatures and almost ZERO rainfall.  I am so happy about this as the first day of our trip was nearly monsoonal.  After making our way back to our resort, we took a walk on the beach and started to prepare for tomorrow.  We pick up our car tomorrow, we hope to go up to Port Douglas and surrounds.  We don’t have a plan, so we will just see how it progresses!  Hope you enjoy the pics from the day!
