Can anyone figure this out?

August 1, 2008

I am the only one who can’t figure out gift registries?    In my plethora of errands that I completed today, I came in contact with two gift registries-one wedding and one baby.  It should be noted that I LOVE to give gifts.  Oh wait, I love to give the “perfect” gift.  Yes, I will wander the aisles of Target searching for the holy grail-the one gift that will satisfy the perfectionist side of my personality.  But here is my flaw.  If I can’t find anything on the registry that I want to give-you ain’t getting something from your registry.  Unless I don’t know you very well.  Case in point-the wedding registry.  The wedding is tomorrow, so there were very few items left to chose from.  So what did the lucky couple get?  A frying pan.  How romantic.  I guess that is what happens when you wait until the last minute.  It was either that or a salad shooter.  See why I picked the frying pan?  Now onto the baby registry.  I obviously have a vested interest in the baby registry for two reasons.  First, it is for one of my best friends-you know who you are 🙂 and second, I will at some point need to create a baby registry of my own.  So I am ready to find the “perfect gift”.  I have pondered this idea for many months since I found out my bestie was pregnant and now it is coming to fruition.  The excitement is building-registry in hand I head to the baby section and what am I confronted by……way too much stuff.  I can’t figure out the registry, NUK this and rainforest that, but there are 12 million combinations of what I think should be the same thing, all with the same price point.  See the price point is my saving grace, if it resembles what is on the registry and is the same price, in my mind that is the same thing-even if it isn’t.  Now panic is ensuing.  I wander the aisles for an additional 15 minutes wondering if I am registry stupid, all the while watching other shoppers look at items with certainty that they have found what they want-from the registry.  So finally after circling the baby section in the same way I imagine a vulture circling his prey-I abandon the registry.  Sorry Rachel.  After many laps and pondering of color schemes, I found my perfect gifts.  Maybe they are on the registry and I just don’t know it…..

I hate registries. They are nice when you don’t know what to get someone, but they seem very impersonal. Like you said “Happy marriage, here’s a…frying pan.” AND Target doesn’t automatically update the registry! So you THINK they haven’t gotten whatever you’ve chosen, and three other people think the same thing, and suddenly the happy couple is blessed with three frying pans! It’s a mixed blessing.

I hear you on registries…what a nightmare at times. Well…we officially started our blog for Colombia. Not sure how I will manage to keep up 2 blogs since I have a hard time just keeping Mason’s up. Once they are home, I think I will combine them to one blog 😉

You are so funny and still so OCD but that is what I love about you. Having you and Jer in the baby’s life is going to be a gift (a perfect one at that) enough.
